Free Wi-Fi is available in the seating areas of all our branches and the Main Library.
Frequently-Asked-Questions About Wi-Fi
What is Wi-Fi?
Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) allows you to connect to the Internet without wires using your own portable device such as a laptop.
How can I use wireless Internet at the Library?
Most users can bring their wireless-enabled laptop computer to the Library and turn it on. If you are a first-time user, follow the directions in our Quick Start Connection Guide.
How much does it cost?
There is no charge for using our Wi-Fi service
Where can I plug in my laptop?
You can use available power outlets wherever the cord does not present a trip hazard or block access for customers or staff. Bring a fully charged battery in case electric outlets are not available.
Do I need a library card?
No, you don’t need a library card to use the service.
Can I search the Library Catalog and special databases using wireless?
Absolutely! Links to our catalog and collection of databases can be found on our homepage. Because the wireless service is on an indepedent network, you will be treated as a remote user when using the databases. Remote access to a few databases in our collection is not available—you will need to access those databases via a computer terminal in the branch or department.
Can I print while using wireless?
Yes, you may print documents from your WiFi-enabled portable device to be released at a library print station. All print jobs will remain on our print server for 1.5 hours after submission. You must be using the Windows operating system. Printing through WiFi is not currently available for Linux or Mac users.
- Download the print client. (Windows only. This client cannot be used on 64 bit Windows.)
- Open the executable file and select "Run" if prompted.
- The print client will begin running on your device, and an icon will be placed in your taskbar (the program will disappear after you shut down your device).
- Print your document(s) like you normally would (File->Print, or use the print icon in the application). Select the "\\10.110.10.90\black and white" printer ($.15 per page).
- When prompted, enter a unique User ID. This ID can be anything you choose (just be sure to remember it, as it will be needed to release your prints).
- When prompted with the total cost of your print job, either click "OK" to continue or "Cancel."
- When presented with a list of available printers, click "Ok" again.
- After clicking "Ok," you may use any print release station located in the library to release your print job. At the print release station, click on "Release a Print Job" and enter the User ID that you established when you submitted the print job from your WiFi device. You must either use your library card or a print card to pay for your print job(s).
- Please note: Printing from the catalog is free if you are using Internet Explorer. Any other web browser will show you a $0.15 charge. This is due to a limitation in the client. If you do not want to use Internet Explorer, please see staff when printing from the catalog.
- Let library staff know if you have any questions.
Am I allowed to use my notebook speakers?
Please access Internet applications with sound using your headphones. We do not provide headphones.
Are there any restrictions on my use of the Internet?
Internet users in the children’s area of any of our agencies are not permitted to access Internet sites which may be unsuitable for minors. Users in all areas of Library locations may not use Internet sessions in a manner that is deliberately offensive or creates a hostile or intimidating environment. While accessing the Internet at the Library, users must comply with all applicable federal, state and local laws. Wireless users agree to abide by The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County’s Standards of Library Behavior.
Is wireless access filtered or unfiltered?
WiFi access on your laptop is filtered.
Is my information safe while using wireless?
To protect the information on your laptop, we strongly encourage the use of security measures such as virus protection software and a personal firewall. Security measures are the sole responsibility of the laptop user. The Library is not responsible for any loss of information or damage to your laptop that might result from using the wireless network or other facilities of the library.
Can Library staff help configure my computer?
You are responsible for understanding how to configure your own equipment. Check your equipment’s manual. We cannot be responsible for any changes you make to your computer’s settings. If you need additional assistance, you may need to contact the hardware or software manufacturer.
