The Cincinnati Enquirer recently reported that the Library is considering a tax levy this fall. We want to provide some clarification on information included in that report.
The Public Library of Cincinnati of Hamilton County is at this time looking at putting a levy on the ballot in November of 2009. Unfortunately, due to the decline of state funding, our library will be facing a $9 million dollar deficit by 2009. We must find a secure source of funding or be forced to make dramatic cuts to our library including cuts in services and closing branches. Last year over 5.6 million visits were made to the Main Library and 40 branch libraries. These cuts would drastically affect all who rely on our library every year to check out free library materials, use our free computers or wi-fi, attend our children’s programs, or utilize any of our other many services.
We are currently working with the commissioners and the tax levy review committee to participate in any local review that is necessary. We will keep everyone informed as we move forward in this process.
