About Farewell My Subaru
“In this memoir of mishaps and lessons learned, Fine shares his yearlong trek to turn his newly bought New Mexico ranch into a green and sustainable environment with as little carbon fuel as possible. From using two very lovable goats for his organic food production to transitioning into a biofuel engine for his truck and even installing solar panels, Fine balances the troubling decisions Americans must consider while also revealing a host of unexpected benefits.” —Publishers Weekly
About Doug Fine
While traveling the world as an adventure reporter, Doug had an epiphany: he felt most alive while living and loving in wild ecosystems. So he followed this impulse—a stark contradiction to all the values of his suburban upbringing—to a beautifully obscure valley in Southern New Mexico to see if he could truly live a sustainable lifestyle. Farewell, My Subaru, chronicled Fine's quest to see if he, a "Digital Age Human", could live petroleum-free without giving up the comforts of modern life. The conclusion: he could…once he figured out how to keep the coyotes from eating his chickens, his solar panels from electrocuting him, and his vegetable oil truck exhaust from giving him a bad case of the munchies.
