Libraries work, because of the people who work in them
April 13 is National Library Workers Day, which recognizes and celebrates the valuable contributions made by all library workers. Our services would not be possible without the dedication and hard work of our entire staff. We hope you will enjoy learning more about the non-public staff who work diligently behind the scenes to make sure that you have a positive experience each time you visit the library!
Executive Director's Office
The Executive Director’s Office consists of the Executive Director and an Administrative Assistant. The Executive Director, appointed annually by the Board of Trustees, is responsible for the overall administration of the Library’s services, operations, and facilities.
Development Director
The Development Department is responsible for raising funds to supplement our tax funding. We work closely with our Foundation and friends’ organizations. Donations of all sizes are greatly appreciated and are used to buy books, collection, fund programs, enhance facilities and expand services provided by the Library.
Fiscal Office
The Fiscal Office is responsible for all financial transactions and reporting, including general accounting, payroll, purchasing (except library materials), ordering all supply items and for maintaining the inventory of the central supply, insurance and central supply. The Fiscal Officer, appointed annually by the Board of Trustees, is personally responsible for the overall administration of financial operations, records management and legal compliance for the Library.
Library Services Office
The Library Services office staff provides ongoing support for the Library Services administrative areas, including the Main Library and all 40 branch libraries. In addition, we are responsible for the Library’s website, selecting the Library’s collection, planning programs, and compiling Library statistics.
Collection Development. We choose the books, audiobooks, CDs, DVDs, databases and ebooks.
Programs & Exhibits. Program/Exhibits Department staff plans and implements system wide program activities. We focus on yearly programs such as the Summer Reading Program, Children’s Book Week, and other special programs, plus the exhibits at the Main Library.
Website Development. We develop and support the Library’s websites sites including our homepage, Kidspace, Teenspace and our newest addition, Fifty Five +.
Literacy and Homework Central. We oversee all literacy efforts for the library and are responsible for Homework Central located at the Main Library, as well as homework assistance offered in branches.
Outreach Services
In Outreach Services we serve Library customers who can’t come to the Library. We provide service to persons living in nursing homes and retirement centers, and through our Books by Mail service we serve customers in their own homes who can’t visit a Library location. We also provide Teacher Collections to more than 500 teachers and also serve those in Correctional Facilities.
Material Retrieval
At the Main Library much of our collection is in closed stacks and a staff member must get them for you. That’s what we do in Material Retrieval Department. We also fill your hold requests.
Book Distribution
We check in every item returned at Main and put them in Dewey Decimal order for delivery to the various Main Library departments.
Public Relations
Public Relations manages all Library publicity, publishes LINKS, eLinks and Administrative Update and prints promotional materials for Library programs and exhibits. In addition Public Relations coordinate system wide distribution of Voter Registration materials, Unclaimed Funds publications, and adoption videos.
Graphic Production. Graphic Production designs the web page and produces hundreds of posters, bookmarks, booklists, and brochures for and about the Library.
Human Resources
This department manages all Human Resource activities for the Library system which includes employment, compensation, benefits administration, employee relations, staff training and development, and legal compliance as it relates to staff.
Technical Services
Technical Services is made up of several departments including Acquisitions, Cataloging Services, Processing, Computer Services, Digital Services and Intranet/RUFUS.
Acquisitions. Orders and receives all materials for the Main Library and branch collections for public collections. We work closely with the Library’s public service agencies, Fiscal Office, and a myriad of publishers and jobbers to obtain materials as quickly as possible and at the lowest price.
Cataloging Services. We are responsible for organizing materials by assigning Dewey Decimal numbers and subject headings. We created and maintain the ILS Integrated Library System, which includes the Library catalog and the circulation system that allows you to look up and check out items from our Library.
Processing. We are responsible for preparing all new and replacement materials for circulation and reference use at Main Library and all branches. We add call number labels and book jackets to make the items ready for you to use.
Computer Services. As Computer Services staff we are responsible for the purchase, installation and maintenance of the computers and printers of the Library. We work hard to provide you with accurate and timely customer service. We support Library customers and staff here at the Library and also through our Help desk.
Digital Services. Digital Services is responsible for digitizing material and making these digitized books available over the Internet through the Virtual Library.
Intranet/RUFUS. The Intranet Site Developer develops and maintains all applications and information on the Intranet, RUFUS, which is the internal website.
Facilities Services
Facilities Services provides clean, comfortable, safe, and functional buildings at the Main Library and all branches. In addition, we provide the shipping that gets your holds to your local branch for convenient pickup and delivery of materials to schools, nursing homes, and retirement communities through Outreach Services.
Custodial Services. We are responsible for the general cleanliness of all library locations. Included in our duties are special event and program set up, grounds work, and snow and leaf removal.
Shipping & Receiving. We are responsible for sorting and directing all incoming and outgoing mail, transporting all Library materials to all Library agencies. We are also responsible for the general upkeep of the library fleet of vehicles, assists with plowing of lots for snow removal, and delivers school collections.
Facilities Help Desk. We maintain the MP2 work order system, purchase requisition process, and the AutoCAD blue print computer program.
Safety & Security. In Safety and Security we protect the rights and safety of every Library customer and staff member. We are also responsible for protecting Library resources, facilities and property and are on duty 24- 7.
HVAC & Maintenance. Our staff maintains and operates all heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems at all Library agencies. We are responsible for the Energy Management Systems: the observation and adjusting of space temperature setpoints, enabling/disabling heating and cooling, monitoring kWh usage and maintaining the Library’s mechanical systems. We are also responsible for the general maintenance of all Library buildings including electrical, plumbing, furniture moves, lock and door repairs, and just about any other type of repair. Maintenance also assists in the plowing of lots for snow removal.
