What’s New · A Tribute to the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War

Join us for a series of programs marking the 150th anniversary of the Civil War and celebrating October as Family History Month. The series kicks off on Saturday, October 1 and continues throughout the following weeks with programs featuring regional genealogical experts, local historians, and an after-hours lock-in at the Main Library. All programs will be held on the third floor of the Main Library, unless otherwise noted.

Saturday, October 1: Kick Off Event - Day with the Experts

10:00 a.m. Introduction to Family History Blogging: Workshop with Kathy Reed, Genealogy expert and member of the Hamilton County Genealogical Society (Third Floor Program Area)

11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Free Consultations with the Experts - Genealogical advice on German, Irish, African American, land record research and more from area experts (Genealogy and Local History Department)

12:00 p.m. Tours and Orientation to One of the Nation’s Top Ranked Genealogy Collections (Genealogy and Local History Department)

1:00 p.m. Tuning Up Your Blog: Computer Lab with Kathy Reed, Genealogy expert and member of the Hamilton County Genealogical Society (Third Floor Computer Lab. Reservations required: call 513-369-6905)

Saturday, October 8, 2:00 p.m Searching for your Civil War Ancestor at the Public Library & Beyond: Join Reference Librarian Albert Hallenberg and Cincinnati Civil War Round Table member, as he discusses how to find your ancestor, searching rosters, service and pension records, regimental histories and other official documents, both online and in print. (Third Floor Program Area)

Saturday, October 15, 2:00 p.m. Ready, Set, Go: Preparing for the 1940 Census: Patricia Van Skaik, Genealogy and Local History Department Manager, discusses the soon-to-be released 1940 U.S. Census records (Third Floor Program Area)

Saturday, October 29, 6:30 to 11:30 p.m. Genealogy and Local History Department Lock-in: Join a group of genealogists and conduct research “after hours” at the Main Library (Reservations required: call 513-369-6905)

Saturday, November 12, 2:00 p.m. Cincinnati and the Civil War: Local historian Robert Wimberg and author of three books on Cincinnati and the Civil War will talk about the many local connections to the Civil War. (Third Floor Program Area)

Saturday, November 19, 2:00 p.m. After Mustering Out: Researching Civil War Veterans presented by Amy Johnson Crow, a Certified Genealogist who specializes in Ohio research. Published author, Trustee of the Association of Professional Genealogists, chair of First Families of Ohio, and past editor of Ohio Civil War Genealogy Journal. (Third Floor Program Area)
