I know I’m not the only middle-aged woman to write this story, but I hope by doing so I can make another’s life adjustment easier.

I moved back to Cincinnati in January, 2001 just out of a long term alcoholic marriage that took me away willingly from Cincinnati 30 years ago. While moving back was again my choice, the emotions weren’t. Feelings of fear and loneliness can become powerful motivators. I needed a mental jolt.

Where books and movies were never a financial concern before, I now needed to be a better money manager. Needing access to a computer brought me to the library and from there to a great connection. I found the clubs Cincinnati offers—some of which include Support Groups I needed to recover emotionally, Book Clubs, Professional Organizations, etc. I also located a Master Gardener’s Class through the Ohio State Extension Office which was a long time personal goal of mine to complete.

Tastes change after life throws a curve. I used to like fiction, often relying on friends and even Oprah to choose my reading. Now I take the time to choose according to my needs and wants. That I preferred nonfiction to fantasy during my divorce led to an incredible variety of new materials—downright practical advice. Taking on the management of my finances became less overwhelming, and having all the tax forms and information available at the library encouraged me to do my own taxes for two years now.

Books on tape make a long car trip shorter, the latest DVDs save me money, the Gardening Classes at the branches keep me informed and fulfill my need for continuing education credits. But on top of my reasons to appreciate the library is that I found needed inspiration in the biographies of strong women.

Age happens. Life happens. Staying interested and interesting is up to us. Supply the motivation and the library supplies a good chunk of the rest. My thanks to the Public Library.
