Meet Author Amy Waldman
|
Meet Amy Waldman, author of The Submission, this year’s On the Same Page selection. Her novel explores how 9/11 has challenged our personal convictions and changed the public debate about what it means to be American. All programs are free and open to the public. The author will discuss her book, which will be available for sale and signing at all events.

Throughout March, book discussions about Amy Waldman’s novel The Submission and many other related programs will be taking place all over the city. CSO Woodwind Concert

Visit the Corryville Branch Library (2802 Vine St., 513-369-6034) on Saturday, March 3 at 2:00 p.m., for a fun-filled classical music experience for the entire family performed by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra’s Woodwind Quintet. This concert is part of a quarterly series of family classical music events with the Cincinnati Symphony and Pops Orchestras, sponsored by the Valerio Family Fund. Artists and programs are subject to change.

My Cincinnati House - Elmwood Hall

My Cincinnati House is an exciting program series at the Main Library showcasing unique area homes. On Saturday, March 10 at 2:00 p.m., join architect Patrick Snadon who will share the history and some experiences about his house Elmwood Hall, built in 1818 as the seat of a 1,000-acre estate. According to 19th century English writer Francis Trollope, this enchanting, classical-style house in Ludlow, Kentucky, is “like a bower of a rose in Siberia.” Visit the Library’s website for more information about the series.

National Passport Day, March 10

Did you know that passport applications are accepted at the Main Library? To highlight the ongoing availability of this service, during National Passport Day on Saturday, March 10 from 9:00 a.m-5:00 p.m. and on Sunday, March 11 from 1:00-4:00 p.m., the Library will have additional staff available to assist customers with their passport applications. Appointments are strongly encouraged but walk-ins will be accepted as staffing permits. Allow 30 minutes per person for the application process. Clifton Used Book Sale & Preview Party

The Friends of the Public Library will host a Used Book Sale from March 15–17 at the Clifton Cultural Arts Center, 3711 Clifton Avenue. The sale includes gently used fiction and nonfiction books, as well as audiovisual items such as CDs, DVDs and VHS tapes, as well as a large selection of quality children's books. A Preview Party to update the community on the progress on the relocation of the Clifton Branch Library to the historical property built for George "Boss" Cox and to offer early access to the Sale will be held on Wednesday, March 14 from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. Tickets for the Preview Party are $20 per person. Light refreshments and beverages will be available. Visit the Friends website for sale hours. Irish Music & Dancing - Friday, March 16

Join us for the 30th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Celebration of Song and Dance, sponsored by the Friends of the Public Library, on Friday, March 16 at 11:45 a.m., in the Main Library’s atrium. Featuring music with Foley Road and a special performance by the McGing Irish Dancers, this tribute to Irish heritage is family-friendly and fun! What risks would you take to save someone you love? The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is a gripping survival story that explores themes of poverty, privation, political repression and violence, as well as triumphant themes of self-sacrifice, love, and compassion. The novel was on The New York Times list for over 100 consecutive weeks and has been the Library’s #1 teen fiction title for 24 consecutive months. Lizzie Borden - The Eternal Fascination

The Borden case is among the most bewildering murders ever to occur in this country. Homer & Jethro: Song Satirists

Do you remember the “song butchers” Homer and Jethro? Join us on Saturday, March 31 at 2:00 p.m. in the Main Library’s Huenefeld Tower Room for a discussion of the comedic musical duo who started their recording career in 1947 in Cincinnati at King Records and also performed on WLW radio. Presenters include Karen Raizor, author of the upcoming biography of Homer and Jethro.

March is Reading Awareness Month

Do you want to improve your child or grandchild’s wellbeing, school readiness, and learning outcomes? Research shows that the simple act of reading aloud is the single most important thing you can do to prepare your child to learn. During Reading Awareness Month in March the Library is encouraging all parents to make reading to their children 15 minutes every day part of their daily routine. Your library has a range of fun and engaging books to suit your child. Ask your librarian for recommendations.

Teen Drawing Contest Winners

Check out the winning work of some of the many talented teens who entered the Library’s second annual Teen Drawing Contest. As part of the contest, the Art Academy of Cincinnati partnered with the Library to provide free programs to help teens develop their original ideas into their final artwork. Chipotle Mexican Grill and the Friends of the Public Library sponsored the contest.
