Hidden Hawaii

The Antiquities Act of 1906 gave the chief executive the power to declare a designated area as a National Monument, similar to a National Park but outside the rule of Congress. On June 15, 2006 the Papahanaumokuakea (the mythological goddess who gave birth to the Hawaiian Islands) Marine, encompassing 140,000 square miles of ocean and 10 islands and atolls of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, became the world’s largest protected marine area in the world by order of President George W. Bush. National Geographic takes the viewer to this remote area, home to over 7,000 species, on a fascinating month-long expedition of discovery and exploration.
