Renowned British military historian John Keegan (The Iraq War, 2004) surveys the American Civil War in his latest offering. According to Keegan, the Civil War was unique in many ways. Determined soldiers willing to fight for ideological motives, the sustained intensity of combat despite mismatched sides, complications of topography, and a lack of decisive victories created a battlefield never seen before or since. “Keegan provides the best one-volume assessment of the character and conduct of America’s ordeal by fire,” writes Library Journal.
