King Solomon’s Mines
In 1885 Sir H. Rider Haggard published the first novel set in Africa and introduced the big game hunter Allan Quatermain. An immediate bestseller, the book has since inspired six filmed versions of the intriguing story. (Check library catalog for 1950 version starring Stewart Granger.) In 2004 Patrick Swayze (1952-2009) took the role of Quatermain for the Hallmark Channel’s highly romanticized, action-packed miniseries. Swayze is the quintessential romantic adventurer, intrepid, ruggedly handsome, venturing boldly into unknown territory.
