In Silva’s latest international espionage thriller (after Portrait of a Spy, 2011), art restorer/spy Gabriel Allon is back, cleaning up a Caravaggio in Rome. Then he gets a call from the Pope’s personal secretary, Monsignor Luigi Donati, who has found the body of a woman lying beneath the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica. Could it be a suicide like the Vatican police suspect? Allon doesn’t think so …
