Will Sparrow's Road
Young Will Sparrow’s mother has deserted him and his father sold him to an innkeeper for a supply of ale. Will, a self-proclaimed liar and thief, is also daring and clever, unwilling to be a servant. He joins a ragtag group of travelers: a thief, an illusionist, a blind juggler, and a dwarf. During his travels he befriends Grace, a “monster” with silky hair on her face. Set in Elizabethan England, Cushman has thoroughly researched the customs of medieval time, as she did in her Newbery-Award-winning Midwife’s Apprentice (1995). Will gains empathy and strength in this fascinating coming-of-age tale. Ages 9-11
