The Crushing of Eastern Europe, 1944-1956
Anne Applebaum

With a Pulitzer Prize already to her credit, Applebaum's latest title is a nominee in the non-fiction category for the 2012 National Book Award. In it, she concentrates on Poland, Hungary, and East Germany to explore the growth of communism and how the Soviet government absorbed these countries. Although the outside world was presented with a complete Soviet bloc, Applebaum's research led to people who adapted to the new regime but never really embraced the whole story and were able to keep the dream of democracy alive through their generation to the next.
