My First Day
This beautiful picture book shows 22 different animals immediately after birth. The first day of life is explained in brief text and textured cut-paper illustrations. Among the featured animals are the wood duck, Emperor penguin, wildebeest, and leatherback turtle. Contrasts are featured: the kiwi is self-sufficient from birth yet the Siberian tiger cub can’t open its eyes on day one. A glossary gives more information on each animal including the fact that a mother zebra spends the first hour of her baby’s life memorizing his unique stripe patterns.
