When No One Is Watching
This shy heroine tries to disappear when other people are around yet she’s brave and adventurous when she’s alone or with her best friend. When alone: “I cheer for myself as I race near the hoop, I soar and I score with a dunk and a whoop!” If others are near she retreats: “I hide like the cat alongside the big chair. I scrunch myself down and pretend I’m not there.” Shyness is presented in a nonjudgmental way and Spinelli’s character has an inner confidence that is appealing. A reassuring and comforting story for introverts and their friends. Ages 5-7
