The Paradox of Modern Parenthood

There are lots of books about parenting, but shouldn't this be a two-way street? After all, anyone who is a parent realizes that your life is never the same once that baby is born. Where children were once considered a "useful" part of the family, today's young ones are "protected". With the current ability to manipulate family size and the spacing of siblings, why is it that most people would consider parenthood a "high-cost/low reward activity"? This expansion of a New York Magazine article looks at what effect children have on the lives of their parents.
