It’s 1934 and Marika Schnurmacher suddenly has a lot of problems. Her once stable life seems to be falling apart. Her father has just built a wall in middle of her family’s apartment in Budapest, Hungary and now Marika, along with her mother and older brother, live on one side of the wall, while her beloved father lives on the other. But Marika’s family problems are only the beginning of her troubles. As she grows up, the Nazi threat broadens across Europe and Marika is told by many of the people she trusts most in the world to seem “less Jewish.” Marika and her family go to Catholic Mass and celebrate Christmas, but as the German army approaches, she begins to realize that nothing will keep her family safe from the violence and anti-Semitism growing in Hungary. How far will Marika and her family have to go to escape the coming Nazi terror? How much of her identity will Marika have to hide in order to survive?
