After Toswiah Green’s father testifies against two fellow officers who killed an unarmed teenager, she and her family are forced to abandon their comfortable lives and enter a witness protection program. It doesn’t take long for the tension of living in a strange place under new identities to take a toll on the family. Toswiah, now known as Evie, watches helplessly as her father sinks into depression, her mother loses herself in religion, and her older sister edges away from the family. It’s an enormously difficult time for Evie but the lonely, confused, and frightened young girl finds the strength to come to terms with her new life.
