Jayna feels alone when her older brother Rob joins the Navy and she must live with their cantankerous old landlady. Nicknamed Gingersnap by her mother (who died in a car accident along with her father) Jayna finds comfort her parent’s belongings. She discovers a recipe book with a photo and address in Brooklyn and is convinced the woman pictured is her grandmother.
With her pet turtle and the recipe book, Jayna travels to Brooklyn in search of the Gingersnap Bakery and her family.
