The Tragedy Paper

Elizabeth LaBan

Debut novelist LaBan examines private-school culture as well as the minds of two very different teenage boys. In his senior year, Duncan Meade inherits Tim Macbeth's room and with it, a stack of CDs containing Tim's reminiscences of his last, tragic school term. Tim, a self-conscious albino, fell for the beautiful Vanessa, girlfriend of Irving's most popular boy. Duncan becomes transfixed and horrified by Tim's story and he feels partly responsible for the outcome of Tim’s love triangle. He decides to use the tale of forbidden love as the focus of the tragedy paper, the required senior thesis which must answer for both the Irving graduate and the reader the question: how do you define tragedy?
