The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender
Walton’s debut is a multigenerational novel wrapped in the language of fable, magic, and local legend. It retells the family history of 16-year-old Ava Lavender who in all other ways is a normal girl except for the fact that she was born with wings. Her story begins with her great-grandmother in France and follows the family through ill-fated romances and personal calamities. Surrounded by death and despised by their neighbors, the Lavender women live in seclusion and Ava is no exception. Although she’s desperate to fit in with her peers, Ava is ill-prepared for and naive about the twisted motives of others.
