Carsick:John Waters Hitchhikes Across America

John Waters

Armed with his trademark pencil-thin mustache and a cardboard sign that read “I’m Not Psycho,” cult film director John Waters decided to give up control of his over-scheduled life by hitchhiking across America from Baltimore to San Francisco. He imagined worst-case scenarios involving his personal safety, but he was picked up by a 20-year-old Republican town councilman in Maryland, an indie band on tour in Ohio, a married Illinois couple in Kansas, and an 81-year-old farmer who thought he was a hobo. Waters says his journey (that took 8 days and 15 rides) taught him an important lesson: it can be thrilling to not know where life is taking you.
