Egg & Spoon
In his YA debut, master story-teller, Maguire (Wicked, 1995) draws inspiration from Russian folklore. In the early 20th-century, Elena Rudina is left alone to care for her widowed and ailing mother while one brother is in the Tsar's army and another bound to serve a local landowner. When a train is marooned in the village, she and her counterpart, the wealthy Ekaterina, accidentally swap places, setting a wild adventure in motion. Their escapade includes mistaken identity, a monk locked in a tower, a prince traveling incognito, and the mythological witch, Baba Yaga.
