Rites of Passage
In Hensley’s fast-paced debut, Sam McKenna, 16, is among the first young women to attend the all-male Denmark Military Academy and her angry male peers hope to oust the girls before the first semester is over. But Sam is determined to make it and she begins a year of punishing training, terrible living conditions, and nonstop emotional and physical abuse. As she struggles to prove herself, Sam discovers that some of the boys won’t rest until she quits. They are not acting alone because a decades-old secret society is alive and active and determined to force Sam out at any cost.
