Russell Gaines feels he has paid his debt to society after eleven years in Mississippi's Parchman Penitentiary for manslaughter caused by drunk driving. The day he arrives back in his hometown, the brothers of the man he killed are waiting and ready for revenge. Across town, a homeless woman, Maben, shoots a deputy sheriff after he abducts and rapes her while she was trying to illicit money for sex for her and her daughter's survival. Russell comes across the scene shortly after the authorities. The loaded gun tucked behind his seat places suspicion on him. Mabens's path crosses with Russell's and things only get more complicated as the two try to keep their lives together.
