The Memory Trees
Wallace's (Shallow Graves, 2016) latest is a magical story about Sorrow Lovegood who spent the first eight years of her life in an unusual apple orchard in Vermont. Since the late 1700s, the brave and resilient Lovegood women have tended this orchard, kept their name when marrying, and held to their practices and beliefs despite the ridicule of townsfolk and persecution by their neighbors, the Abrams. Eight years ago, after Sorrow’s sister Patience died in a mysterious fire, she was sent to live with her father in Miami. Now 16, she returns to the orchard for the summer, determined to learn more about her troubled childhood and the family she left behind. But it soon becomes clear that some of Sorrow’s questions have difficult, even dangerous answers, and there may be a price to pay for asking.
