Music for Queen Mary

Henry Purcell

Music for Queen Mary features works composed for the much-loved Queen by the brilliant Henry Purcell (1659-1695). On this disc, conductor Stephen Cleobury, the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge and the Academy of Ancient Music pair the Queen’s birthday odes with her funeral music. Purcell composed “Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary” between her death in December 1694 and her funeral the following March. Ironically, portions of the work were performed again that November, at Purcell’s own funeral. The modern ensemble matches the somber yet warm emotions of the English people following their beloved Queen’s death. Gramophone says, “King’s provide much to enjoy in Purcell.”
