The Astor Orphan:A Memoir

Alexandra Aldrich

The name Astor conjures up images of Gilded Age society - big houses, constant entertainment, the inner circle lavishly enjoying all the best money can buy. In this memoir reminiscent of Grey Gardens, it is now the 1980s and the years have not been kind to Rokeby, the 43-room mansion on the Hudson River. The family has splintered, and the house is now inhabited by impoverished, bohemian relatives who exist on the glory of the bygone days. Aldrich is the poor little girl who grew up in the servants' quarters of her family's home, visiting her wealthy grandmother for a decent meal and some stability in her life.
