Digital Material · Frequently-Asked-Questions About the Ohio eBook Project

Ohio eBook Project

The Ohio eBook Project offers a wide variety of digital books for adults, teens, and kids.

What is a digital book?

It’s a digital version of a print title that can be downloaded to your PC, laptop, PDA, smartphone, or MP3 player. To read or listen to digital books, you need to install the free reader (Adobe Reader, Mobipocket, and OverDrive Media Console) software. Once you’ve done that, you can enjoy digital books without being connected to the Internet.

How do I get started?

It’s easy! Step-by-step directions for working with digital books are available on the Ohio eBook Project website. A good starting point is the “New to Digital Books?” link. This Digital Books Quick Start Guide has information about downloading and registering the free reader software, and guides you through the process of checking out titles and working with your account. A “Digital Media Guided Tour” is also available.

Is there any charge for using this service?

No, all you need is your library card number and PIN.

What kind of titles are available?

The Ohio eBook Project website includes bestsellers, classics, fiction, and nonfiction from popular authors and well-known publishers. A selection of titles for teens and children is also available.

How many digital books can be checked out at one time?

Up to 10 titles. Once you’ve reached this limit, you will not be able to check out any additional titles until the license for a downloaded book has expired.

How long can I keep it?

The loan period for most digital books is 14 days.

Can I renew eBooks or digital audiobooks?

Titles can be renewed (downloaded again) if copies are available when your checkout “expires.”

Once the book is due, how do I return it?

It isn’t necessary for you to return digital books. On the due date, the title is automatically returned. The digital file will remain on your computer, MP3 player, etc. but it will no longer be readable.

Can I accumulate overdue fines?

Because the titles are automatically returned, you will never be charged overdue fees.

What happens if a title I’m interested in is checked to someone else?

You can place a hold on the book. When it becomes available, you will be notified by email that it’s ready to be downloaded/checked out. Please note, holds for digital books will not be listed when you “Review Your Account” in the Catalog. Holds on digital books can be reviewed in the “My Digital Account” section of the Ohio eBooks site.

What devices are compatible with audiobooks from the Ohio eBook Project

The audiobooks can be listened to on a wide range of devices, including portable music players, portable media centers, Pocket PCs, and smartphones. More information about compatible devices is available on Overdrive’s website.

Can I listen to the digital audiobooks on my iPod?

No, you cannot download audiobooks to an iPod. Audiobooks are only available in Windows Media format. Please refer to “Digital Books Basics (Audio Books)” for more detailed information about downloading digital audiobooks.
