This month is the fifth anniversary of the formation of the Main Library's Magazines & Newspapers Department, which drew together the periodical holdings previously spread among the Main Library subject departments. We thought we'd mark the occasion here by featuring the Library's periodical collection.
With over 5,000 current title subscriptions and archives that span four centuries, the Library's magazine and newspaper collection is an enormous resource developed to meet the varied interests of the Library's users. Until the arrival of the internet, periodicals were the best source for up-to-the-minute information; readers looking for well-arranged, current information with clear editorial control will still find them irreplaceable. Periodicals are a superb source for local information and for selected information directed to specialized interests. And they're a fascinating record of primary information, public opinion, and popular culture for the centuries in which they were published.
The development of electronic indexes and full-text databases has made research in periodicals easier and more up-to-date than ever. The internet has made it possible for the Library to offer access to many more periodicals than it could ever house. Explore these treasures through the links below. Or call the Magazines & Newspaper Department at 513/369-6973, reach them by fax at 513/369-3123, or e-mail them for more information.
