James S. Wise [1830–1890]

It has been near two weeks since we left Paducah. On our way up the Tennessee we were surprised at the large crowd of people that gathered to greet us when we landed at Savannah. They seemed elated at our arrival there.

Sickness is not uncommon among us. And while we have not yet engaged the enemy, our regiment has suffered its first loss. Illness has overcome Capt. Ireland. We buried him this past Sabbath.
