James S. Wise [1830–1890]

Each filled with passengers and each gaily decked with flags and streamers. Thousands of people crowded the river banks and bridges waving their hats and handkerchiefs. A great deal of noise was heard as the steamers sounded their whistles and were answered by cannons and mill whistles on shore. The parade proceeded several miles upriver and then down. Shortly after 2pm each steamer returned to its landing and the great spectacle was over. The steamboatmen can be proud of its success. I wish you could have been here.

I hope that Martha and the children are doing well. Jane and the girls send their love.

With warmest regards,

James
