Capt. John S. Devenny
c/o W. A. Devenny, New Orleans

Dear John:

On the fourteenth the river here finally reached its highest mark at 71 feet ¾ inch. This city has never known a greater flood than this one. Speculations were many on the river’s highest stage. I myself never thought it would reach 66 feet. Capt. Richardson made the closest call, wagering the river would rise to within an inch of 70.
