In Liu’s second novel, (The Memory Key, 2015) Mei, a recent high school grad, accepts a high-paying summer job as a tutor for the wealthy Morison family. She knows that the extra money will come in handy and looks forward to spending the summer in the secluded mansion on Arrow Island. It's also a welcomed break from her needy mother, her delinquent brother and their tiny apartment in the city. Although young Ella seems like a well behaved girl, everything about the Morisons and their house seems strange and mysterious. Mei is terrified of the unexplained howling, thumping and cries she hears at night. She can’t shake her fear that there’s a darkness lurking in the shadows of the mansion that could destroy the Morison family and her along with them!
