The Apocalypse of Elena Mendoza

Shaun David Hutchinson

Hutchinson’s (At the Edge of the Universe, 2017) lighthearted yet sensitive take on the Rapture, touches on such important topics as sexuality, mental illness, grief and friendship. Sixteen-year-old Elena Mendoza doesn’t have a father because she’s the product of a virgin birth. Although this can be explained scientifically, what can’t be explained is how Elena is able to heal Freddie, her crush, from a gunshot wound in a parking lot. Or why the boy who shot Freddie disappeared into the clouds in a beam of golden light. As more unbelievable things occur, and Elena continues to perform miracles, the only explanation is the least logical of all—that the world is coming to an end and Elena may be the only one who can prevent it.
