A Very Large Expanse of Sea

Tahereh Mafi

Mafi’s (Restore Me, 2018) latest is a powerful and contemporary novel about fear, first love, and the devastating impact of prejudice. It’s an extremely turbulent time, barely a year after 9/11 and Shirin, a Muslim teen is jaded, cynical, and tired of people assuming that she's a terrorist. She doesn't trust anyone and won’t even try to fit in or let anyone get close enough to hurt her. That is until Shirin meets Ocean James in biology class. Against her better judgment, she lets him in and slowly begins to fall for Ocean. But the new couple soon becomes targets of racism, xenophobia, and bigotry.
